Why Celebrating International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st Matters

As International Overdose Awareness Day approaches on August 31st, we are reminded of the urgent need to address the overdose crisis. For The Jordan Leigh Foundation, this day is not just a date; it’s a powerful opportunity to honor Jordan’s memory by working to prevent what happened to her - from happening to others. Our dedication to this cause is rooted in a strong commitment to raising awareness and educating the public about the preventable nature of overdose deaths.

In Canada, the crisis has been exacerbated by tainted drugs, making it more dangerous than ever. The unpredictability of drug content poses a significant risk, as even a single use of contaminated substances can be fatal. Often, those involved in tampering with drugs are unaware of the exact quantities they are mixing, further increasing the danger. That’s why it’s crucial for everyone to understand and utilize Narcan (naloxone), a simple yet life-saving tool that can reverse the effects of an overdose. We will be posting a "how to use" guide for nasal naloxone (Narcan) to help you stay prepared.

Safe drug use sites, staffed by medical professionals, also play a vital role in overdose prevention. These sites provide a safer environment for drug use and immediate assistance in case of an overdose, significantly reducing the risk of fatal outcomes.

Addressing the stigma around mental health—often intertwined with addiction—is another core mission of our foundation. Mental health struggles frequently accompany substance use, and fostering open conversations about these issues is essential for lasting change. Through our RISE UP Community, uplifting merchandise, and community outreach, we are committed to breaking down these barriers and promoting understanding.

On August 31st, we invite you to show your support by wearing purple and sending us your photos. This simple act symbolizes our collective commitment to addressing the overdose crisis and supporting those affected, honoring the lives we have lost, acknowledging the impact on families, and standing with those currently suffering.
With over 10,000 overdose deaths reported in Canada in 2024, the crisis is severe and widespread.

Let’s take this opportunity to make a difference together.
Are you ready to join us in this vital cause and show your support?
